SUMMARY OF THE CANTERBURY SPANISH
SCHOOL
WORK AND STUDY PROGRAM IN MADRID
|
 |
INTRODUCTION
Romantic and poetic Spain is waiting for you to broaden
your horizons, enhance your education and gain valuable
experience for your career. Learn Spanish and work
for us teaching English. Fun and excitement in Madrid.
As Federico Garcia Lorca wrote, "The air of Andalusian
Rome / gilded his head / where his smile was a flower
of wit and intelligence. / What a great torero in
the ring! / What a good farmer in the sierra! / How
gentle with the wheat! / How hard with the spurs!
/ How tender with the dew! / How dazzling the fiesta!"
Spain and the Spanish are all this and more. |
|
If you would really like to immerse yourself in
the vividness of Spain, what could be better than
taking an entertaining Spanish course in the vibrant,
beating heart of downtown Madrid in small classes
taught by our native speakers. You can receive university
credit for a month of classes that is equivalent
to half a years study back home, greatly increasing
your conversational and comprehension skills. The
Canterbury Spanish School is a recognized centre
with a highly qualified and motivated staff, for
which we have been awarded the Madrid City, Golden
Laurel in 1999. Come and study with us, where the
practical learn by doing approach is combined with
the vivacious Spanish culture.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS AND OPTIONS
The intensive Spanish program is 4 weeks long, with
20 hours of lessons a week in the mornings, four
hours a day from Monday to Friday. The course begins
on the first or second Monday of every month. The
classes are small, averaging between 2 and 8 students
per class, which is a great benefit in individual
attention and speeds up the learning process. Because
our school is a Canterbury English partner, if you
are a native English speaker, you can combine your
Spanish classes with our one to three month Teach
English Work and Study program.

| WORK AND STUDY:
TEACH ENGLISH PROGRAM |
|
|
|
| |
 |
Our Teach English Program in the afternoons is
an excellent opportunity to gain international experience
in Spain, as well as to help pay for the Spanish
course and earn extra money. You will work teaching
between 3 and 8 hours a week (at 10 Euros an hour).
After you have paid the Spanish course in full,
you are paid in cash once a month for your teaching.
This means that if you teach about 8 hours a week,
your teaching pays for the whole Spanish course.
|
|
Special offer for students who
are taking
the Canterbury TEFL Certificate International
Most of the students who take our TEFL certificate
program first take our Spanish course. This choice
is completely optional and depends on the student.
A typical Canterbury Spanish School student does
the Spanish program in lets say March, starts teaching
English classes towards the end of March, informally
in the afternoons. In April, they start the one
month TEFL program (Teaching English as a Foreign
Language, see TEFL), and continues to acquire more
English classes until they have a minimum of 15
hours a week. The times of both programs are designed
to leave you free to teach English classes in the
evenings, while the courses are in progress.
For students who do both programs, there is a 40%
discount on the Spanish program (normally 799 Euros,
now 499 Euros). For more details see Cost of the
Program and Price Options below.
 |
After finishing the Spanish
and the TEFL programs, the student is now
a professionally trained English teacher and
speaks the suggested minimum (to teach English)
of lower intermediate Spanish (the level reached
after the one month of intensive Spanish classes,
if the student started with a beginning level).
The student now
has all the tools to remain in Spain for a
year or more, as a Spanish speaker and as
a professional English teacher.

Teaching at Canterbury English
Canterbury English was founded in 1991 by Richard
Clarke, MBA, and the Canterbury Spanish School a
few years later and is directed by both Richard
and James Clarke.
- Canterbury English specializes in teaching English
in companies and in peoples homes.
- We will give you all the necessary teaching
materials and you will be advised/backed up and
trained by our Teacher Trainer.
- Teachers walk or travel by metro to their classes
which are from 1 to 2 hours in duration.
- For teachers who have no experience teaching,
we will give them easy to teach conversation classes,
with small groups of 2 or 3 people.
- You are paid once a month for classes taught.
Why Spain?
From its stunning beaches to its medieval castles,
Spain is a country as diverse as the Roman, Jewish
and Arab cultures that have influenced its art,
architecture, music and lifestyle. It is a land
where cathedrals, palaces, flamenco guitars and
dancers, friendly 'tapas' bars, famous museums and
folklore festivals, make it a unique and enchanting
place to work, study and enjoy the Spanish art of
living.
Why Madrid?
The Spanish coast and islands are the most popular
vacation spots of Europe, while Madrid is Europe's
most exciting capital city. Rich in history and
tradition, it provides the perfect surroundings
for your studies. You will delight in discovering
the world famous Reina Sofia Museum, the Plaza Mayor,
the magnificent Retiro Park and Botancial Garden,
as well as the Rastro, Madrid's famous street market.
After these visits, we recommend going to one of
Madrid's popular 'tascas' (taverns), where you will
find a vast array of 'Tapas' (canapes). Night owls
can enjoy the many late night bars and terrace cafés
that the city has to offer.
Why Canterbury Spanish
School?
SPANISH CULTURE CLASSES, WORKSHOPS AND EXCURSIONS:
The Canterbury Spanish School program includes Spanish
culture classes on history, civilisation, art, politics
and drama. Our cultural agenda includes guided excursions
to local attractions. Sample excursions include:
Royal Palace, Prado Museum, Romantic Museum, and
much more.
The evening agenda includes fiestas, tapas, flamenco
performances and more organized by the Canterbury
Club. These activities are optional and there is
always representatives and other teachers from the
school present. This improves the relationship between
teachers and pupils, who become friends and thus
create a better atmosphere in the classroom and
enable a greater understanding of the life of the
country, its residents and culture.
The activities facilitate getting in contact with
Spaniards and, thus, considerably accelerate the
language learning process. And what is more important,
they are lots of fun! For these optional activities,
the student pays for themselves (although Canterbury
always arranges special discount prices for students
and teachers) as they would for drinks, entrances
to the cinema etc.
At the weekend, most students go on day or weekend
excursions to Toledo, Segovia, Salamanca, Ávila,
Aranjuez, etc. Our professors also facilitate 'Intercambios'
or language exchanges with Spanish students.

|

| |
|
|
| |
 |
You
are also warmly welcomed into the fun Canterbury
Club which, depending on the month, organizes
the following Fiestas: Flamenco Nights, Pub Nights,
Concert Nights, Movie and Live Theatre Nights, Casino
Night, Terraza Night and Day Trips: Golf Day, Football
and Picnic in Retiro, Bullfighting and Barbecue Day,
Don Quijote Road Trip, Segóbriga Roman city
trip, The Fallas of Valencia, The Grape Picking Party,
The Celtic Iberian town of Numancia, and on the Trail
of Dinosaurs in Soria.
As you can see, studying with us is all about learning
a lot and stopping to smell the roses! |
- The Canterbury Club has a very active
social calendar with students and professors,
which includes Pub Nights, Movie Nights, Theatre
Nights, etc. (see our newsletter for this month's
event).
- You will find out about the many cultural opportunities
in Madrid, such as Museums, Botanical Gardens,
Live Flamenco Shows, Bull Fights, and of course
the fabulous and unrivaled night life that this
city has to offer.
- You will see articles in the newsletter and
find out about information on cultural visits
to Toledo, Segovia, Seville, Barcelona and other
places of interest, which you can do on the weekends.
At Canterbury, we have a family vision of studying,
teaching and having fun. That is the reason for
the Canterbury Club. The Club is a chance for students,
teachers, office staff, friends and family of everyone
to get together and have a great time as well as
sharing experiences and making new friends. There
are two fun social activities a month, where you
can practice your Spanish with students and friends.
